Sinful Sunday

Sunday is the sabbath, therefore we must not work. So why not devote our Sundays to sin instead? Fun sin like eating ice cream with your hands relaxing in the bathtub, not scary sin like eating ice cream with some hands off the person you just killed floating in the bathtub. Thinking about and engaging in sin is about as far away from work as one could possibly get, so why not do it on Sunday? By relishing the pleasure in life that the universe has granted us, aren't we showing greater appreciation? Remember Shug Avery, the very sinful character in my all time favorite movie, "The Color Purple" who said, "It pisses God off if you walk by the color purple in a field somewhere and don't notice it." Same goes for sin.

A sin that's been on my mind ever since the start of winter is a favorite winter themed duet about sexual pursuit and coy rebuffs. I love this song's ability to build sexual tension perhaps because of, instead of despite it's charming anachronistic lyrics. If you doubt the degree of sexual charge of the song, watch the video, which brings the sexual intent of the characters into crisp focus, as well as giving an inspiring role reversal with two additional characters performing the same charade. Unfortunately many movies new and old take the theme of reluctant women and aggressive men to such a degree that sociologists and psychologists have coined the term, "rape myth acceptance" to describe the ways our culture perceives women's role in rape (I do not think it addresses rape of men). For example, how many movies have a real jerk of a man costarring with a strong-willed woman who spends 110 minutes of the movie eventually to admit she's fallen in love and really does want sex after all? That said, I think we can enjoy this song at face value, a song about the social rituals, especially from times past, that all of us still engage in in one form or another.
